Hello and welcome to Huntsville Magazine! I’m Takara Swoopes Bullock, Founder, Editor in Chief, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to the new city magazine of Huntsville, Alabama!
Every great city has a magazine that reflects it charm, tells its stores, and shares its unique culture. This is Huntsville’s.
We’ve spent the past few months, speaking with local businesses and residents, all with the intention of better understanding what Huntsville needs when it comes to a city magazine. Today, I’m going to share with you what we’ve learned and answer Huntsville Magazine’s most commonly asked questions.
What we learned, listening to Huntsville residents and business owners
During our customer interviews, we learned that our readers desire content that focused on entertainment, restaurants, things to do, and stories featuring people and new developments of Huntsville. Put plainly, Huntsvillians want to be in the know!
For Huntsville businesses, we learned that business owners strongly desire a broader reach, more channels, and marketing campaigns that deliver greater impact (more sales!).
The team behind Huntsville Magazine.
So who are we? The Huntsville Magazine team consists of a cast of Huntsville natives, locals and transplants who all love this city and are excited to build something amazing for you. We have award-winning photographers, skilled videographers, accomplished writers, seasoned marketing professionals, social media experts ready to build the City Magazine for Huntsville.
As for me, I’m a Decatur, Alabama native. Huntsville was my ‘big city’ when I was growing up. I recently returned home to this area, after spending the past twenty years living and working in Washington D.C., Tokyo, Japan, San Diego, California, and most recently, Honolulu, Hawaii. Although each of these cities are different, something they each have in common, is an amazing city magazine that introduced and connected me to the city. To this day, I am still so very thankful to DC’s City Paper, Tokyo’s Metropolis Magazine, San Diego Magazine, and Honolulu Magazine, for helping me enjoy and experience their respective cities.
Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we’d love to share and answer for you.
Does Huntsville need another magazine?
Absolutely, emphatically yes! Magazines, especially city magazines, have an amazing ability of bringing people together. Community and connection are always a good thing.
There currently exists some wonderful print and digital publication that serve our city. Those include Events Huntsville Magazine, Huntsville Business Journal, The Scout Guide Huntsville and Launch Lifestyle Magazine. As for digital, there’s All things Madison, Rocket City Mom, We are Huntsville and Huntsville.org.
Our decision to bring Huntsville Magazine to Rocket City doesn’t take anything away from the existing print or digital magazines in Huntsville or surrounding areas.
Which leads me to the second most commonly asked question…
What’s different about Huntsville Magazine?
After some extensive listening over the past few months, something we’ve heard repeatedly is that readers want a lot more centralized content; and local businesses desire a digital and print publication with a broader reach and more diverse audience.
Thus, we have intentionally designed a multi-channel platform that delivers great content to our readers, while delivering a broader reach for our advertisers. We are truly, multi-channel; and understand that our Instagram audience is different from our Facebook and print magazine audiences, who are both very different from local event-goers and podcast subscribers.
Further, it is important to us that Huntsville Magazine’s content, team, and values reflects the population of the Huntsville Metro Area. Thus, we are just as diverse as our city. We want Huntsville Magazine to be a conduit of inclusion and community, not divisiveness.

I love your online Huntsville Magazine! My son, Casey Caplin, started a little local TV guide and magazine called “Huntsville Alive!” back around 1984/5. He took local pictures for the cover, wrote the stories, sold advertising, did the layouts, and inserted the monthly television schedule. ( We bought our very first computer to help with the billing.) He would deliver the magazines to local hotels to place in the guest rooms for TV guides and advertising for local restaurants and businesses. Casey was only 19 years old but he did it all totally by himself with a little help from me doing the billing and editing. The magazine didn’t last but a few months due to the printing costs exceeding the revenue received from ads but it was quite the experience! Good luck with your venture! The quality and content of Huntsville Magazine is outstanding!!
